About ECI's High School Outreach

The ECI High School Outreach Program was established during Fall 2014 in collaboration with the UIUC Undergraduate Student Chapter of ACS and local high school teachers. Currently, the ECI High School Outreach Committee (HSOC), the ECI U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator, the UIUC Student Chapter Outreach Chair oversee the three different areas of this outreach program:

  1. High School Chemistry Clubs. High school teachers in our section form an outreach committee that aims to start local ChemClubs, exchange teaching materials, and encourages students to get involved in chemistry and STEM-related extracurricular activities.
  2. Undergraduate Student Chapter Demonstrations. Undergraduate volunteers from our student chapters run hands on demonstrations, Q&A discussion panels, and practice USNCO exams for local high school students through an outreach program titled "Bridging the Gap: Promoting College-Level Thinking in High School ChemClubs."
  3. Local Section USNCO exam. The USNCO chair of the section organizes local and national level exams for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, a multi-tiered competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry.

    High School Chemistry Clubs

ACS Chemistry Clubs (ChemClub's) provide high school students with an opportunity to experience chemistry beyond the classroom. There are over 600 clubs across the United States and abroad where students participate in after-school activities, get involved in community building, learn about chemistry careers, enjoy social events, and better understand how chemistry plays a role in our everyday lives.

ChemClubs within the ECI Local Section:

    • Iroquois West High School
    • Urbana High School

Other high schools involved in the ECI Local Section:

    • Uni High School
    • Mahomet-Seymour High School

    Undergraduate Student Chapter Demonstrations

The Student Chapter at UIUC sends representatives to local high schools where they perform demonstrations and answer questions about undergraduate chemistry at UIUC. Demonstrations include:

    • Light, Energy, Matter: Discover how oxidation, combustion, and conductivity relate to key chemistry concepts.
    • Forensics: Connect concepts from your classroom to this high interest and real-world topic.

    U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO)

The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is a multi-tiered competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored by the American Chemical Society. Each year, four students are chosen to represent the USA in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which is hosted every year in July in one of the participating countries. 2019 USNCO Schedule:
